Secrets Of Rajnikant's Website (Is it really running without internet)

No joke, it’s true!! A new website dedicated to the superstar Rajinikanth runs ‘without an internet connection’!

Desimartini.com, a portal for all bollywood news, released a microsite http://www.desimartini.com/allaboutrajni.htm.

Interestingly, while browsing, if a user connects to the internet, a message pops up, which says, “This was unexpected. To keep browsing, switch off your internet”. So, keep your internet connection off to enter the site. If a visitor attempts to re-connect the internet, an error message will appear in a Rajinikanth’s style.

“Aiyyo! That was unexpected. To keep browsing, switch off your Internet,” reads the message.

The website has been designed by Webchutney for desimartini.com. The developers of the site inspired by Rajini wanted to make the site unique in every way possible. WebChutney had a mandate to design Rajinikanth’s website for his 61st birthday and after going through many deliberations, they wanted the website to run on Rajni Power, not Internet.

Visitors to www.allaboutrajni.com are greeted with a warning that “He is no ordinary man, this is no ordinary website. It runs on Rajini Power” and are advised to switch off internet connection to enter the website.

Fans can view interesting stuffs about Rajini. His stunts, images and interesting jokes, all can be looked at, in one destination. It has three sections- Rajinikanth the man, the superstar, and the legend. The site is very different from others you see.

When the web is disconnected, one is allowed to explore the site. We can trace the story of the legend from the beginning, read inside scoops from his films and get a glimpse of behind-the-scenes action.

“The unbelievable spectacle of running a website without the internet is a tribute to Rajinikant’s larger than life image,” claimed Webchutney’s creative director Gurbaksh Singh, who developed the site for Desimartini.com.

Singh told that the website is based on a complex algorithm running in the back-end that keeps an eye on the propagation of data packets between two terminals.

“The website has received a phenomenal response and has gone viral with several thousand hits and counting, along with innumerable shares and mentions across the web, especially on popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter,” Singh said.

How The Website Works Offline ???

How could that be possible? Well, the website is nothing but a Flash file that needs an initial Internet connection to get download on the computer (the browser's temporary folder, to be precise). Once the Flash file is downloaded, technically, the whole website is now on your computer's hard drive itself.

Now, the next challenge is to be able to investigate whether you are connected to the Internet or not. This is achieved by constantly pinging a certain IP address on the Internet. In case the website manages to get a reply, that confirms the presence of the Internet connection and swiftly blocks the access to the website until the connection is severed again.

So, how does it work, again? When you visit the website at first, the website itself gets downloaded onto the hard drive. However, access to the website is blocked as long as the computer is connected to the Internet. And that connection can be confirmed by constantly pinging an IP address on the Internet. No reply means no connection.
