Google Chat adds warning banner to protect against phishing attacks

Google Chat has replaced Hangouts and will now display banners warning you against potential phishing and malware attacks coming from personal accounts, Google announced Thursday. This tweak to Google Chat is the latest extension of Google's efforts to stop phishing.

During its 2022 I/O developer conference, Google discussed a number of security measures it has implemented to enhance user security, including warnings against potential security issues and recommendations for fixing them. Google also rolled out other plans for security measures, such as expanded two-step verification, ad optimization, and more data protection.

Google's new warning banners first appeared on workspace accounts in Gmail, indicating attempts to woo someone with a link that could be used for malware, phishing or ransomware. In late April, Google expanded the banner to Google Docs, warning users against suspected malicious files in several Google Workspace apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings), regardless of where they opened the link.

This new feature is rolling out over the next few weeks, and will be available to individual Google accounts and all Google Workspace customers.
