Microsoft is planning 3D Metaverse apps for Xbox and gaming
Microsoft announced the Microsoft Teams Metaverse for meetings and video calls, but the company also has plans for gaming and entertainment. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the software maker is "absolutely" focused on gaming for the metaverse with Xbox.
"You can expect us to do something in gaming," Nadella says. "If you take Halo as a game, it's a Metaverse. Minecraft is a Metaverse, and so is the flight sim. In some sense, they're 2D today, and the question is, are you going to do it now? Can play? Can create fuller? 3D worlds, and we totally plan on doing that."
We've been waiting to see what Microsoft will do for Minecraft to turn it into a metaverse for VR and AR headsets over the years. The company originally demonstrated Minecraft's potential with augmented reality in the initial introduction of the HoloLens headset, who tried out the experience. It looked like a special version of Minecraft for the HoloLens was in the works six years ago, but so far we've only seen Minecraft Earth, a mobile augmented reality mobile game, come and go.
