Now Apple's iPhone car keys will unlock some 2022 Genesis and Kia models

Apple's digital car keys are coming to the 2022 Kia Niro, 2022 Genesis 690 and the all-electric 2022 Genesis GV60. As spotted by MacRumors, Apple added a prominent symbol next to all three vehicles in a listing on its site, indicating support for the feature.

It's not clear when Apple first updated the list or whether the feature is immediately available on any of these cars. There's no official announcement from Apple or any car company yet, so the rollout could include more steps. Kia and Genesis have reportedly been working to integrate Apple's digital car keys since last year. Samsung has also announced a partnership with Genesis (along with Audi, Ford and BMW) to create a phone-based digital car key of its own.

A Kia spokesperson told MacRumors that the company will have "more information" about the digital key in the coming weeks. Apple and Genesis did not immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment, while Kia declined to comment.

BMW was previously the only carmaker to support Apple's digital car keys, which let users lock or unlock their cars by holding their Apple Watch or iPhone by the car's door handle or while the car is near. The availability of either feature depends on whether the car supports NFC or the iPhone 11 and later supports the iPhone's Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing the car to be locked with your phone in your pocket or purse. is allowed to do. And unlocking becomes possible. Users can also use digital keys to remotely lock, unlock or start their cars (if supported by the vehicle).

Apple's digital car keys are part of a company-wide push to reduce the number of items you carry in your pocket or purse. Today, Apple announced that users in Arizona can use their Wallet to carry their driver's license or state ID, and plans to expand the feature to several other states in the near future. Apple lets users staying at select Hyatt hotels unlock their rooms with a digitally stored key.
